The Tournament
The US Masters is the first of the season's golf Majors and it simply drips with tradition with its limited field and the ceremony of the previous winner presenting the new winner with the famous green jacket.
The Course
The Masters is the first of America's three golf majors and it's the only one held every year at the same venue. No chopping and changing courses as the
Augusta National course at Augusta in Georgia is its permanent home. However that doesn't mean that the course is always the same as it most definitely isn't as it has been regularly changed significantly over the years. It is now a very long
7,435 yard par 72.
The course contains many of the most famous holes and features in golf including the legendary Amen Corner, Eisenhower Tree and Rae's Creek - for more about the tournament and the course, visit the Official Website at www.masters.com.
The Small Field Is A "Punters' Paradise"
There is a limited field and at present there are 96 confirmed starters - there are 12 ageing past major champions, 6 amateurs, 12 debutants and 10 others who have played here before but have never made the cut. So from a punters' point of view there is, in effect, a 'real field' of 56. Yet the bookies still offer 1/4 odds the first five.
The Return Of The Tiger
This year the big story is the return of Tiger Woods after his much-publicised 'transgressions' followed by that dreadfully insincere press conference.
Whether he'll be the same player since news of his personal problems broke is unclear, but Woods' record at Augusta is phenomenal - in 1997 at the age of 21 he won his first major here, breaking the tournament record with the lowest cumulative winning score throughout of 270 (18 under par). He has subsequently worn the Green Jacket on three further occasions (2001, 2002, 2005).
So This Year There Are Several Key Questions:
- Can Tiger, after all his off course problems, really win his 5th Green Jacket?
- Can Phil Mickelson overcome his recent poor form and domestic worries, and build on his tremendously consistent record at Augusta where he has had two wins and five other punter friendly top five finishes?
There Are Also Some Interesting Posers:
- Which 80/1 outsider is a major winner who has posted 5 consecutive top 20s at Augusta?
- Who is the 25-year-old player, with 5 wins in the last 26 months, who is expected to be the Best Bet to be top Debutant?
- Which in-form British player really fancies his chance this year and has said that: "I'd love to win the Open but the US Masters is my best opportunity?"
- Who is the young player who was T2nd for Greens in Regulation on his Augusta debut two years ago and will now be a solid bet in the Top American market?
