On Monday afternoon, March 15th, in his legendary Early Birdie Golfline Keith Elliott gave 33/1 shot
RHYS DAVIES as his No 1 pick for the week's European Tournament, The Hassan II Trophy.
His reasoning was:
"1. He's made 6 cuts in 7 starts this season with a good 6th in the Abu Dhabi and 3rd in his last start, the Malaysian Open, his top finishes.
2. Last year he had two wins and two 3rd places in his last 11 starts on the Challenge Tour.
3. He has a really good short game and with his proven record in the Far East he'll enjoy the heat and humidity.
4. A player who has a good record when playing on courses new to him as he showed for example in 2008 when he was 2nd after losing a play off for the Vietnam Masters.
IN SUM: Has a sound EW chance at 33/1."
However there was DOUBLE DELIGHT as the success story continued in America in the Transitions Tournament
KJ CHOI finished 2nd at 40/1
His reasoning behind backing Choi was:
"1. Loves it here, winning in 2002 and 2006 and finishing T6th 2007.
2. 2009 was his first non-winning year on the PGA tour since 2004. Last year he arrived here 80th for scoring average and 43rd A-R, started 22/1 and MC. This year he's 7th and 15th respectively yet almost twice the price. Also T15th par 3 performance.
3. Bounced back to something like his best with an Asian win late in the year and has started in 2010 in generally progressive form with top 25s at Torrey Pines, Pebble Beach and Mayakoba, and 2nd in the Malaysian Open on the European Tour.
IN SUM: Although his very best form here came when it was an autumn event he's got a spring-time top 6 from two attempts and arrives here in very good nick, and 40/1 is a crackin' price."
THE TRANSATLANTIC DOUBLE ALSO WON at 33/1
VJ SINGH [non runner] and RHYS DAVIES was the week's Transatlantic Double and with VJ a non runner the double became a WINNING SINGLE at 33/1.
